Subashri Sasidharan @Brahma Gana Sabha

I got an opportunity to see Subashri Sasidharan a disciple of Bharatanatyam dancer-teacher, S. Divyasena performing for Brahma Gana Sabha. After an invocatory dance to Ganesa set in raga Arabhi, tala Adi, an iconic composition of vidwan Mangalampalli Balamuralikrishna Subashri deftly took up the challenge of performing Swamiyai azhaithu vaa di sakhiye set in khamas raga and tala Adi composed by Tanjore Quartet. The nayika pleads with her sakhi to bring her beloved to her, consumed by longing and the pain of separation. Her desire for union with him eclipses all else, symbolizing the mortal soul’s yearning for the divine. She marvels at Shiva’s power, recalling how he reduced the God of Love to ashes with his third eye. In the charanam she is overtaken by ‘viraha thaapa- seperation and distress. Since what she is going through is understood by none she begs her Sakhi to give her an ear.
A finely trained dancer Subhasree
was able to maneuver her swaras and chollus as well as the sahitya
with confidence.
Sree Jagadeeshwari in raga Ahir
Bhairav and tala Adi of Lalgudi G Jayaraman was rendered successfully emoting
karuna rasa with a slokam praising Rajarajeshwari. The powerful team
accompanying Subashree were her guru Divya Sena on the nattuvangam, mridanga vidwan
B.P. Haribabu-who was also the composer of the jatis performed- Srikanth
Gopalakrishnan on vocals K.P. Nandini (violin), and flautist Mohanraj
Jayaraman.
