Margazhi Reviews - Amrutha Venkatesh @ RR Sabha

For her concert at RR Sabha, Amrutha Venkatesh was accompanied by Anirudh Athreya on the khanjira, L. Ramakrishnan on the violin, and Praveen Sparsh on the mridangam. The presence of her guru, Prince Ram Verma, added a special grace to the event.

Amrutha began with a varnam in Varamu, composed by Prof. T R Subramaniam. She followed this with Mysore Vasudevacharya’s Girija Ramana nathajana in Gambheera Nata, delivering crisp kalpana swarams with concise patterns, quickly transitioning between them without over-elaboration. Her adeptness in sarvalaghu was evident as she infused them with jantais and thatus. Her koraippus and kalpana swarams emerged as clear strengths.

Amrutha and L. Ramakrishnan then offered outstanding Saveri alapanas, with Amrutha balancing the jarus and brighas masterfully. She followed with Periaysami Thooran’s Muruga Muruga, where Anirudh’s charanam accompaniment stood out. The niraval on the line Senthil maanagar vazhum was thoroughly explored, with Amrutha shifting the base note throughout, traversing the entire Saveri scale.

Next, she performed a brisk rendition of Sogasujooda tarama in Kannada Gowla. Amrutha’s spontaneous improvisations enriched the compositions, complemented by Praveen and Anirudh's sensitive accompaniments, providing well-timed silences and synchronised playing to highlight her variations.

The concert’s main piece was in Hamsanandi, a refreshing change from the typical Todis and Kambhojis. Both Amrutha and L. Ramakrishnan presented captivating and intricate sangatis in the raga. Needu mahima pagoda by Harikeshanallur Mutthah Bhagavatar was the main composition, where Praveen’s mastery over silences and well-placed rhythmic patterns elevated the piece. The kalpana swarams and the overall rendition were exceptional. Anirudh and Praveen delivered a remarkable tani.

Amrutha concluded the concert with Maharaja Swati Tirunal’s Reena madanutha in Behag. Her improvisations enhanced the composition, leaving a memorable impression.
