The Season, 75 Years Ago

The December Music Season of 1950! The first to be held in the Republic of India! The Big Three, namely the Music Academy, the Indian Fine Arts Society (IFAS) and the Tamil Isai Sangam (TIS), were all itinerants so to speak, for none was as yet functioning from its own premises. The Music Academy, though it had purchased its property in Royapettah, had only moved its Teachers’ College of Music and offices there. But all its concerts were still held at the Sundareswarar Hall, RR Sabha, Mylapore, with the academic sessions being held at the PS High School premises. The IFAS was still operating out of Gokhale Hall, Armenian Street, while the TIS had its programmes at the St Mary’s Parish Hall, George Town.
