Venkatamakhi and the 72 Mela-s

Venkatamakhi was a famous musician and musicologist. He was the second among the eight sons of Govinda Dikshitar – the famous minister in the Tanjavur Nayak court. He was well versed in Sanskrit and music. Venkatamakhi served in the court of the king Vijayaraghava Nayak who encouraged him to write the book Chaturdandi Prakasika – a major treatise on music. Venkatamakhi also wrote books on philosophy, astrology and aesthetics.
