Saptaswara devata: Pa

Panchama is the fifth swara in the sthayi and is denoted by the syllable Pa. Along with the shadja, the panchama is known as prakriti swara as it is unchanging or devoid of varieties of its own. Kallinatha describes the swara as— ‘swaraantaraanaam vistaaram yo mimite sa panchamah’. This could be roughly explained as—panchama is that which serves as a measure (a guideline to measure/ understand) for the other / different swaras. However, it is difficult to decipher what the author exactly means by this statement
