Dancing through decades
Celebrating Prof Sudharani Raghupathy's 80th Birthday
The Association of Bharatanatyam Artistes of India (ABHAI), as a part of their 'Immersive journey with legends, organised an event to celebrate the milestone birthday of Prof Sudharani Raghupathy, who turned 80 on 21 March 2024. Prof Sudharani mesmerised the audience with her abhinaya, which was followed by an interactive session with the veteran dancer.
In the heat of the summer evening, stories and anecdotes spanning decades of experience coupled with Sudharani’s witty humour brought forth a refreshing energy to both young and senior members of the audience. Her talk was interspersed with compositions that held a special place in her heart, either because of the rich legacy or the memories attached to them. Watching the octogenarian perform Geliyai ponadadi, a javali and Mella mellale bandhane, a Dasarnama was a memorable experience for the audience. There were several interesting known and rare compositions. From the Huseni swarajati to Thathai mozhiyal, where the sakhi tells the Lord that the nayika is ready and waiting for him.
Her verbal articulation and artistry reflected all that’s gone behind the making of this living legend – be it her legacy and love for the art form, intense passion and perseverance, wisdom and warm-hearted nature.
