Maha Vaidyanatha Sivan

Carnatic music has never
suffered from a lack of
Vaidyanathans. From Kudirai
Vaidyanatha to our own
Kunnakudi, they came in all
varieties and flavours. But if a
book on the 100 great Vaithis
of Carnati c musi c is ever
written, the name of Vayyacheri
Vaidyanatha Iyer or Maha
Vaidyanatha Iyer to be
precise, will claim most
of the space. His
Boswells in the main
were the Tamil Thatha
U.Ve. Swaminatha Iyer
(who wrote a brief
serialised biography
h Kalaimagal, later
reproduced as part of his
Sangeeta Mummanigal)
and Pallavi Subbiah
Bhagavatar who was a
student of Maha
Vaidyanatha Iyer for a
period of seven years
(1876 to 1882).
