The talk will examine what a Padam is – how it differs from a keerthanai and a Javali. It will look at some of the famous composers and focus on the greatest of them Kshetrayya, and some famous singers (with audio clips).
Using parallel evidence from art and sculpture, the talk will explore possible reasons on why Padams became increasingly erotic in the 17th and 18th centuries.
As the lecture ends, we will hear a few padams in the T Brinda, T Mukta style. The talk is specifically for those who seek to be initiated into the metaphor and music laden world of Padams and also interested to understand the socio-political milieu in which they were created.
Speaker - Pradeep Chakravarthy is the author of Thanjavur – A Cultural History and other books.

EK ANANT Dance festival
Sudhaaya Dance Foundation in collaboration with India International Centre, New Delhi are organizing EK- ANANT... the unending ONE, a festival of solo presentation on Friday,21st and Saturday, 22nd of November, 2014.
Conceptualized by Priya Venkataraman and Shagun Butani, this has been planned as a two day festival on solo choreographies in the various classical styles to bring to the fore the richness of the solo format in Indian Dance. A format that is struggling to hold forth in the changing scenario of group choreographies. The two day festival will endeavor to have two components that cover both the performative and the educative aspects of solo choreographies.
The morning sessions will comprise of a series of lectures by scholars, practitioners as also people who have over the years been associated with the dance scene and been witness to a change that is gradually transforming the canvass of traditional forms as we know them. The evening will have solo performances.
